LANAP® Laser Gum Surgery in Raleigh, NC
What is LANAP Laser Periodontal Therapy?
LANAP, or Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is an FDA-cleared treatment for periodontal disease . Using laser technology, Dr. Thiago Morelli can eliminate diseased tissue and stimulate your body’s natural healing response to regenerate new gum and bone tissue. The procedure also encourages your gum tissue to reattach to your teeth, providing healthy support.
Our periodontists use the PerioLase™ MVP-7™ laser for this remarkable procedure; no scalpel or sutures are required.
Benefits of LANAP vs. Traditional Gum Surgery
LANAP can allow patients with periodontal disease to keep their teeth, maintaining their oral function and overall quality of life. With LANAP, you can expect:
Thorough Treatment
LANAP is usually performed in two two-hour appointments at our periodontist’s office in Raleigh, NC : one appointment for each side of your mouth. This allows us to be thorough in our approach to treating your periodontal disease.
Comfortable Care
When compared to traditional periodontal surgery, patients typically report less pain and discomfort during and after the LANAP procedure. LANAP is minimally invasive and targets only bacteria and diseased gum tissue, leaving healthy tissue unharmed. Additionally, patients often feel well enough to continue with their daily activities immediately after treatment.
Safe Procedure
LANAP naturally cauterizes the treatment site, sterilizing the area and reducing blood loss. Treatment is also safe for patients with health concerns like diabetes, HIV, or hemophilia, or those taking medications such as Plavix or aspirin.
Amazing Results
LANAP results in less blood loss, swelling, pain, sensitivity, and gum loss compared to traditional gum surgery. The healing process after laser dentistry can also be faster and more comfortable than traditional surgical methods.
The LANAP Procedure: Step-by-Step Healing
After a gum disease consultation with Dr. Morelli at our Raleigh office, you may be able to move forward with treatment. The LANAP procedure involves several steps:
- Place Laser: The PerioLase laser fiber, which is about the size of three human hairs, will be gently placed between the gum and the tooth.
- Eliminate Infection: The laser will eliminate the diseased tissue and harmful bacteria in the periodontal pockets.
- Remove Calculus: Your periodontist will remove the laser. Once he has better access to your teeth, he will remove any calculus buildup on the roots.
- Remove Debris: The laser will be used again to remove any remaining debris and sterilize the periodontal pockets and bone.
- Heal: Your periodontist will create a clean environment in which healing can begin. During the next few weeks, your gum tissue will reattach to your teeth.
- Repeat: The process will be repeated on the other side of your mouth at a second appointment.
We also Perform LAPIP
At Our Raleigh, NC Practice
LAPIP™ is similar to LANAP in that it is a laser periodontics treatment that addresses gum disease. However, LAPIP addresses gum disease around dental implants . LAPIP can save implants by treating infections and sometimes regenerating new gum and bone tissue around them.
Frequently asked questions about Lanap
-
Q: Is LANAP painful?
- A: LANAP is a minimally invasive gum disease treatment. If you’re worried about pain during a gum procedure, LANAP is probably a great option for you! LANAP is highly regarded for being a comfortable, minimally invasive procedure.
-
Q: What is the recovery time for LANAP?
- A: Since the LANAP procedure does not use scalpels or require stitches, the recovery time is remarkably fast. Many patients recover in less than 24 hours and return to normal activities the next day.
-
Q: How much does LANAP cost in Raleigh?
- A: The cost of LANAP in Raleigh, NC, varies depending on the severity of your periodontal disease and how many quadrants (sections) of your mouth require treatment. Generally, LANAP is comparable in price to traditional osseous (gum) surgery, but patients often save money indirectly because it usually requires fewer follow-up visits and little to no time off from work.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LANAP?
If you have been diagnosed with moderate to severe periodontal (gum) disease, you are likely an excellent candidate for LANAP®. This minimally invasive treatment is widely considered the gold standard for patients who want to save their natural teeth without the pain and long recovery associated with traditional “cut-and-sew” gum surgery.
You may be an ideal candidate for LANAP at our Raleigh periodontal office if you experience any of the following:
-
Deep Periodontal Pockets: Your dentist or hygienist has noted gum pocket depths of 5mm or greater.
-
Bleeding, Red, or Swollen Gums: These are active signs of a bacterial infection beneath the gum line that requires professional intervention.
-
Loose or Shifting Teeth: LANAP is uniquely capable of regenerating lost bone and tissue, frequently saving natural teeth that might otherwise require extraction.
-
Dental Anxiety: You have delayed gum disease treatment because you are fearful of scalpels, stitches, and painful recovery periods.
-
Underlying Medical Conditions: Because the PerioLase™ MVP-7™ laser naturally cauterizes the tissue and minimizes bleeding, LANAP is highly safe for patients with diabetes, heart disease, hemophilia, or those currently taking blood thinners (like Aspirin or Plavix).
Find Out if Laser Periodontal Therapy is Right for You
The only way to know for sure if you are a candidate is through a comprehensive periodontal evaluation. During your visit, Dr. Thiago Morelli will assess your gum and bone health using advanced 3D imaging to determine if LANAP is the best path to restore your smile.
